The AHA & Furphy WA’s Best Steak Sandwich Competition is an annual culinary battle of epic proportions. 

Vote here now to determine which WA venue cooks the best steak sandwich has become a Western Australian tradition, drawing thousands of patrons into pubs, bars and restaurants across the state to determine who makes the best steak sanga.

The AHA & Furphy WA’s Best Steak Sandwich Competition celebrates its 15th birthday this year and after two years of disruption caused by COVID-19, kitchens across the state will be eager to showcase their culinary skills by creating the very best of this iconic dish.

The competition is judged by the general public through an online voting system and participating venues can encourage patrons to vote for their steak sandwich. Each venue is provided with marketing tools including posters, flyers and more.

Over years of intense battles across the state, WA's Best Steak Sandwich Competition has gone from strength to strength, with participating venues attracting new and returning customers, delivering media exposure for the venue and supporting increased sales.

Steak Sandwich finalists will be determined using a combination of methods including online votes, judging criteria and mystery judge visits. Four venue finalists are then determined from Country WA and four from Perth, who then compete in a cook-off in front of a live audience at the AHA Hospitality Expo at Crown Perth.

As a participant in the competition, you will receive various marketing materials:

  • On premise promotional posters
  • Table talkers promoting the competition
  • Various media platforms and outlets promoting the campaign
  • Online advertising including websites and social media
  • Judging is conducted through an online patron voting system at



Should your venue be successful in becoming a finalist for the Hospitality Expo cook-off, the judging criteria is as follows:


  • Tenderness of the meat (beef or lamb)
  • Composition & Presentation
  • Originality / Creativity
  • SaucesValue for money
  • Sides (e.g. chips / wedges)Flavour


Competition rules:

The composition of the Steak Sandwich, recipe and its ingredients must remain the same throughout the competition (from nomination and consumer voting through to final cook-off )




The Steak Sandwich must be available on the venue’s menu throughout the competitionSteak is defined as a cut of meat being beef or lamb
